In Christopher Calvert's own words: "My compositional style is based around exploring sounds which excite certain acoustic effects in our ears, and placing these occurrences within a musical framework. I'm interested in creating textures where different lines blur together to give a stream of continuous sound, and also the gradual shifting of timbre (via orchestration) over extended timeframes. I concentrate more on utilising the ensemble as a whole, where several independent parts join together to create a homogenous soundworld. One technique I am currently investigating is creating a number of these gradually evolving clusters, and then splicing them together to give moments of activity to which the listener can reference; it's very important when working in this area of music to include certain related surface elements which help to sustain the listener's interest.". |
