This piece is to be performed as three separate lines in counterpoint with one another, yet a continuous coherent whole. While each registerally stratified line may be played somewhat freely, rhythmic sub-divisions when moving between lines are to be played with extreme accuracy. Slurs are articulative markings, not breath marks. If and whenever possible, circular breathing is preferable to insure continuity. Breaths, where necessary, should be as short in duration as possible, with the exception of the breath mark ('), indicating a momentary pause. Accidentals apply only to the notes which they immediately precede, with the exception of tied and consecutively repeated pitches; however, courtesy accidentals are frequent without parenthesis. Trills and tremolos are to be played molto subito unless otherwise indicated by crescendo or decrescendo markings. Expressive markings are to be played throughout, in their respective lines, until otherwise indicated by written or articulative markings. The tempo, while approximate, is consistent throughout the time changes. |
