Trombone Solo was completed in February of 2010. This Piece came about as part of an ongoing project to write short unaccompanied solos for each standard orchestral instrument including each of the percussion instruments. Inspired by such diverse sources as Shakespeare's comedies and Dixieland jazz, this particular work can be regarded as a short character study, employing many contrasts in register, dynamics and articulation. It also employs glissandi and flutter-tonguing. The intervals of the minor third and tritone are prominent, as well as many large leaps. Although the tempo is slow throughout, the work is, I believe, imbued with a rather light-hearted spirit. The duration is approximately two-and-a-half minutes. -David Saperstein.
