This cantata can be traced back to two earlier works by Bach: The original work was the cantata "Alles, was von Gott geboren" (Weimar, 1715, BWV 80a); a second version (BWV 80b) was composed in Leipzig between 1727-1731. The simple chorale movement which opens the second version is printed in the appendix of this version of the cantata (BWV 80).
