Calvert Shenk has given us two fine examples of processional music for organ and brass, Ingressio and Joyful Procession. The first, scored for organ and trumpet in B-flat, explores the wide range of sonorities of the organ, in alternation with a well-constructed trumpet part of moderate difficulty. The second piece is written for organ and brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba). Mr. Shenk expertly scores the brass instruments in a variety of textures, from solo, through duet, trio, quartet to the full ensemble. The repertoire of solemn processional music benefits from Calvert Shenk's superb compositional technique. This volume is useful for any "processional moment," including wedding processions and recessionals, and is also appropriate to open or close other festive celebrations like Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, ordinations, baccalaureates, confirmations, etc. |
