A young Frederic Hand found himself taken with a new sound coming out of Brazil, the Bossa Nova. This new wave, which he calls a fusion of jazz and Samba, moved Hand to create Samba, a piece he would perform, record, and arrange for different ensembles through to the present time. A somewhat intricate distillation of the art form, Samba is immediately recognizable yet new. The piece has been augmented a bit for this new arrangement for flute and guitar, dedicated to the Bas Duo (Peter Press, guitar, and Elyse Knobloch, flute). |
