The city of Caldas da Rainha lies on the west coast of Portugal, and its name refers to the thermal baths (caldas) for which the city is known, together with the word for queen (rainha). The work begins with a festive theme in honor of Queen Eleanor, who founded the settlement at the end of the 15th century. This theme is followed by a lyrical passage in which the delightful atmosphere and beauty of the city are depicted, including the parks, the squares and the wonderful buildings. Then the main theme can be heard again, now presented in numerous different ways. The composition finishes with the festive opening theme in its original form, leading to an exuberant conclusion. (Grade 3) Duration: 5:00.
