Most of these are either arrangements of earlier compositions or were composed in conjunction with a piano version. One exception is the artistic Romanze in C op. 42 of only five minute's duration, which Sibelius composed presumably in 1904 specifically for string orchestra. Breitkopf & Hartel first published the popular and often-played piece for strings in 1909. The present volume III/1 of the complete edition of the Jean Sibelius Works contains all the works by Sibelius for string orchestra, including three first publications.
