A set of two songs on poems from the Song Dynasty of China, As In a Dream was written in 1988 for soprano voice with violin and cello (1988). Chen revised the work in 1994 for soprano, pipa, and zheng, and then again for soprano and zheng only, an adaptation premiered by Feinan Wang (soprano) and Yu-chen Wang (zheng) for a concert in 2010.
