The first variation states the melody playfully in the piccolo and trumpet parts. The second variant is more angular and powerful and takes the theme through more dissonant harmonic configurations. In the third variant the theme is stated in the low reeds and is surrounded by a potpourri of trills, glissandos and other dissonant effects. The last section combines variations and builds to a dramatic finale.
