The Smile of the Flamboyant Wings (Hommage a Miro) for piano was triggered by the painting of that name by Joan Miro (1953). In the paintings, sarcasm encounters playfulness in the contrasting colours and the use of complementary lines. The Catalonian folk tune in the latter section of Nieminen's work creates an atmosphere that pays tribute to Miro's homeland.
