Styles include tango, jazz, blues, cakewalk, and waltz, although all of these are portrayed in a 20th century setting. The variety described above is reflected in the work's title, which refers to a mix and match method of composition, almost like the sewn-together rags of a patchwork quilt. Each rag has a separate history and a separate context. The piece may be played as a set, or individual movements may be extracted at the performer's discretion. We hold these truths has been a particular favorite as an encore piece.
