A responsorial chant taken from the Matins of Christmas, the O Magnum Mysterium text has been set by many of the greatest choral composers in history, from Byrd, Gabrielli and Palestrina in the sixteenth century, to Poulenc, Bingham and Laurisden in the twentieth. This setting by Victoria is one of the most frequently performed, a beautifully simple example of Renaissance Spanish counterpoint now available to tuba-euphonium quartets of all levels, perhaps as something more unexpected in a festive programme.
