Composed by Steven Nisbet. Christian,Contemporary,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Score. 21 pages. Steven Nisbet #6111007. Published by Steven Nisbet (A0.884998).

Wesley Suite The world is my parish, a set of four contrasting pieces for organ, is a tribute to John and Charles Wesley, 18th century clergymen and co-founders of the Methodist Church.

The title Wondering Soul is a reference to the first line of the Wesleys’ Conversion Hymn, Where shall my wondering soul begin? which was written after John Wesley’s Aldersgate Street experience in which he felt his heart was strangely warmed.

Wesley’s Gallop paints a musical picture of John Wesley riding on horseback around the towns and villages of England, preaching the Gospel in churches, halls, fields, cottages and chapels.

Chapel Prayer is a reflective piece referring to Wesley’s Chapel in City Road, London, a Methodist Church built under the direction of John Wesley.

The word Liberty in the title of Liberty Fanfare refers to John Wesley’s advocacy for the abolition of slavery. He wrote, Liberty is the right of every human creature. The piece contains musical references to two well-known hymns – (i)  Amazing Grace, the words of which were written by his fellow abolitionist, friend and mentor, John Newton, as well as (ii) And can it be, the words of which were written by Charles Wesley.

Soloists and SATB choir a cappella - Moderately Easy - Digital Download

SKU: MQ.80-335-E

Composed by Charles S. Thatcher and Tomas Luis de Victoria. Triduum/Three Days. Instrument parts. 11 pages. MorningStar Music Publishers - Digital Sheet Music #80-335-E. Published by MorningStar Music Publishers - Digital Sheet Music (MQ.80-335-E).

English. John 18:1-19:42.

This setting of the St. John Passion for Good Friday pairs the traditional chants for soloists with the Victoria choruses for choir. All parts are included in the full edition, and the choruses with lead-ins are in a separate choral edition. Charles Thatcher has skillfully adapted all to fit the Lectionary translation, including the choruses. Singing the Passion on Good Friday adds great solemnity to this Triduum liturgy. An alternate version is available as a digital download that replaces the chorus parts with a single-line part that may be sung by another soloist.

John Cage and I share the same birthday: September 5th. He was born in 1912 and my birth year is 1945. There must be some cosmological link between us because he has always intrigued me - philosophically and musically.

Recently I was in my colleague Prof. Jeremiah McGrann's office waiting for him to join me for a martini lunch after a day of teaching. I noticed on his desk a hardcover copy of John Cage I-VI. I asked what it was and he said it is John Cage's Charles Elliot Norton Lecture he gave at Harvard University in 1988-89. I looked inside and there were these mesostics. Very sparsely distributed on each page, and it looked fascinating, like some hieroglyphic art. I was immediately intrigued by it and thought right on the spot that I should buy a copy and maybe create a song cycle from the texts.

Upon further research, I found out that John Cage compiled the content for his lecture using excerpts from works by Thoreau, Emerson, Wittgenstein, McLuhan, Buckminster Fuller, plus passages from The Wall Street Journal, The Christian Science Monitor and The New York Times. He then created the final text for his lecture by using chance operations with the assistance of a computer program that he created.

And so I did the unthinkable, create a song cycle of words that has no meaning nor narrative in the traditional sense. Quoting John Cage: I have nothing to say, I am saying it, and that is poetry.

John Cage I-VI (2023) is in six movements, scored for soprano and piano.
