The First Nowell was first published in 1832 and again in 1833. It is thought to be from of Cornish origin. The word Nowell is related to the French Noel, which came from the Latin Natalis (day of birth).

Very little is known of this beautiful 16th Century melody, except that in the 1880’s a poem by Katherine Parker was set to it plus the melody was harmonized by George Wilmot and published as In Little Bethlehem.
