Solo Alto Flute (or concert flute) - The Hourglass is a piece cast in four movements. It draws its inspiration from the myth and legend of the romantic ruined fortress of Tintagel on the Cornish coast. Musically speaking the four movements are mainly tonal in character with a slight undercurrent of a melancholic longing which ebbs and flows as the music progresses. Rhythmically the music has a certain syncopated feel, which adds elements of apprehension, excitement and anticipation to the musical discourse.

Beginning guitar courses at the middle school and high school level can be a popular addition to curricula that so often center around performing groups. Standard Music Reading for Beginning Guitar was developed as a sequential, practical method for learning the basics of standard music notation using acoustic guitar as a vehicle. It is not meant to replace other methods e.g., the learning of popular songs or a music theory component, but as a companion so that students can learn about music as a language while, hopefully, continuing to enjoy guitar playing for years to come.

In 1952 the first edition in translation appeared, an English language adaptation by Doreen Hall and Arnold Walter for their Canadian and American students. A few years later, Margaret Murray independently developed a version (1957-1966), essentially to fulfil the needs of United Kingdom teachers. Inevitably the considerable growth of Orff-Schulwerk in the United States led to the publication of the American Edition (1977) to satisfy the requirements of a different educational system and national heritage. Written for the pupils of the chamber music course at the Conservatoire of Barcelona (Conservatori Municipal de Música de Barcelona). 

The work evokes the several steps experienced in the process of self-reflecting, where one looks inward and examines his own emotional responses and behaviours to a given input, idea, decision, thought, etc.

The scoring challenges both performers to interact to each other and negotiate the musical material; sometimes by passing the main thematic ideas on to each other, other times by build it together and other times to influence and alter each other. All of it so both sound sources melt into one single musical discourse which evolves and transforms every so often, as if mimicking the multiple decisions and thoughts one can take during a self-reflecting process.

The motivation behind the composition of this work lies in the need to offer a repertoire with the demands and challenges present in the repertoire used in exam boards and conservatories but with a modern use of harmony and melody such as the one we can hear on television or in the cinema. So the harmonic language, the form, the compositional techniques and the use of rhythm, melody and articulation in this work presents a blend a current style present in American film music, television, musicals, Jazz or minimalism (with influences from composers such as Ludovico Einaudi, Yann Tiersen, John Williams, Michael Nyman, or Hans Zimmer) with the type of writing, thematic treatment, piano technique and musical form found in the classical chamber music repertoire.
