Lullaby (after Rameau) (2009) for piano was composed in honor of the birth of Goldie Celeste Hunka and is also dedicated to her parents: pianist Marilyn Nonken and playwright George Hunka. The substrate of the music is an E–D tolling figure, whose continuous changes in placement and temperament drive the discourse. The overall tone is tender and gentle, even as the music continually tries to burst its confines. (Jean-Philippe Rameau’s harpsichord piece L' Entretien des Muses served as a template for a number of structural and textural aspects.).

Your accompanist will like the way the pizzicato rhythmic figures in the string section have been fleshed out with notes on strong beats to help make the rhythm fit the hand better.

Of course, it would be a great show-piece for social and civic events; its inspiring message would even serve in church-related functions. It may take a bit longer to get all of it under the fingers, as anything worth showing off would demand. Keep your eye open for performance opportunities for social groups tackling issues like depression and self-image. But as the song says, Wake up, wake up! Reach out, reach out!

Versatile Brass 'Old Time Favourites' Collection

This is another popular song from the WW2 era, although it was written a few years before for a film of the same title.

Sing As We Go is a 1934 British musical film starring Gracie Fields, John Loder and Stanley Holloway. The script was written by Gordon Wellesley and J. B. Priestley.

Considered by many to be British music hall star Gracie Fields' finest vehicle, this film was written for her by leading novelist J.B. Priestley. In this morale-boosting depression movie, set in the industrial north of England, Fields stars as a resourceful, determined working class heroine, laid off from her job in a clothing mill, who has to seek work in the seaside resort of Blackpool. This gives her the opportunity both to fall into many misadventures and, of course, to sing.

The decision to film on location brings the film a life and immediacy all too absent from most films of the period. The film provides us with a snapshot of life in a seaside resort in the 1930s. The final scene of the millworkers returning to the re-opened mill while Fields leads them in the rousing title song has become an almost iconic film cliché.

This is a simple arrangement of the title song with the lead line on solo Cornet. There is a vocal part included if required.
