An original horn quartet inspired by a conversation about writing for horns. There are three movements. After some time, I decided to see if this would work well on woodwinds and lo and behold, it sits really nicely on bassoon.

The first movement is called Canon. It consists of a simple theme that is presented in imitation by each of the four 'voices' first at 2 bar intervals then, in inversion at four bar intervals and then in the original form at one bar intervals. There is a linking fanfare-like passage before the final statement of the original motif with fanfare-like adaptations.

The second movement is called Lullaby. The elegant, drifting melody is passed around the four players with a largely chordal accompaniment pattern that needs to be played sotto voce at all times. The tempo is marked Largo, but it is still one-in-a-bar.

The third movement is called Hullabaloo-haloo-haloo. While it is based on a 6/8 cantering rhythm, there is a lot of variation in both the accompaniment and the melody. Again, all the lines have a lot of interest, nobody has to play simple um-chucks, and there's even a solo for the Contra  at the end.

This is a really enjoyable and exciting new addition to the Bassoon quartet repertoire.

Grieg, Wedding Day at Troldhaugen for Bassoon Quartet

One of Grieg's most charming works, Wedding Day at Troldhaugen is the 6th 'Lyric Piece' for solo piano from his Opus 65.

Originally called Gratulanterne kommer (The well-wishers are coming), it was written in 1896 as a memorial of the 25th wedding anniversary of Grieg and his wife Nina.

This piece in in a sprightly D major and evokes celebration and joy. The calm middle section is reflective and melancholic. This version for bassoon quartet was written during lockdown as a tribute to those who have had to postpone their own weddings during the global crisis. I hope you enjoy playing this fantastic work!

A brand newarrangement for bassoon quintet of this well-known tune by Praetorius. It begins with an introduction of long notes, whith the final voices coalescing into one phrase of the melody before the setting begins in earnest. The first section is repeated but in the third verse, a fanfare idea is introduced which then permeates the final verse, leading into a grand plagal cadence Amen. The First bassoon is in tenor clef most of the way through because of the range.

This is the 4th movement of Pergolesi's Sinfonia a Violoncello Solo.

it was used as the basis of Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite No VII Vivo. He arrangesd it for an unusual combination of trombone and double bass duet.
It has a somewhat comical effect.

He added his own distictive harmonies and rhythms.

My transcription for bassoon duo uses Pergolesi's original harmonies.
It does not sound too disimilar to Stravinky's composotion.

I have changed the key from F to C major to suit the range of the bassoon.
