When asked what the theme of his play was, Wilde answered “That we should treat all trivial things in life very seriously, and all serious things in life with a sincere and studied triviality. Gerald Barry’s fifth opera based on the play is genuine comic with a dark heart. The previous four have remarkable libretti, but The Importance of Being Earnest, written in 1894, is all but perfect in its construction, and Barry’s audacious approach triumphantly confounds all expectations. As Barry describes it: The play’s bones are unshatterable. My version is an X-ray of it. The musical references range from Beethoven to Schoenberg, all treated with a reckless panache and impish wit, by turns dazzling, startling and charming the audience.

Gerald Barry’s new opera is based on Lewis Carroll’s two beloved books, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. As with Barry’s last opera, the lauded The Importance of Being Earnest, the composer has created the libretto himself from the author’s original texts. Thus, the work remains faithful to many aspects of the Alice story but is trimmed and compressed into a compact 70-minute opera in one act. Barry’s characteristic highspeed energy and riotous sense of humour propel the action forward in this surreal plunge into the depths of Wonderland.

Feldman's was a music shop in London in the early 20th century. They sold collections of popular music for playing at home, and some of these were called 'Feldman's Sixpenny Editions'. Collections like these were among my first feverish encounters with music as a boy. I fell in love with pieces like 'Martial Steps' and 'The dog barks, the caravan passes On'. I entered into them completely, becoming one not only with the music, but with the paper they were printed on, and the advertisements on the back. I pored over these, laying my face on them, waiting for signs of my future direction. The piano plays a significant role in the music. The last piece in the collection, 'The Innermost Secret', refers to the lunches Satie had with Debussy. Satie said that Debussy cooked pork chops 'with the innermost secret'. (Gerald Barry).

Gerald Barry’s The coming of winter is a setting of an Irish poem dating from the 9th or 10th century, and was commissioned for the 34th Seminar on Contemporary Choral Music at University College, Cork, in May 1997. The setting is notable for its idiosyncratic use of text: not only are the words of the poem sung both forwards and backwards, but the second half of the piece is given over to percussive nonsense syllables, making this a quirky but highly invigorating image of ‘the coming of winter’.

The title No people. comes from the surrealist Raymond Roussel. In 1932 he published a long poem called New Impressions of Africa. For this he commissioned 59 drawings to illustrate the text. The commission was given to the artist through a detective agency so he never knew who the commissioner was or saw the text he was supposed to illustrate. All he got was instructions for each drawing and he had to make the drawings accordingly. A typical instruction might be Nocturnal landscape. Very starry sky with a thin crescent of moon. (No people.) or A rambler, arm raised and fingers outspread, dropping a pebble (still visible) down a well and seemingly straining to hear the sound of its splash. (No other people.) When Roussel put the drawings and text together, the ordinary everyday drawings took on a strangeness they might otherwise not have had if the artist had drawn with the text in front of him. It's the juxtaposition of both unknowns - text/drawings - that gives the final work its strange quality. © Gerald Barry (2013).

The title, No other people., is taken from Raymond Roussel's New Impressions of Africa, a fifty-nine page poem which took him fifteen years to write - a length of time mainly caused by his tortuous compositional methods. In Roussel, sentences are broken down in maze-like ways, often producing others which relate to the sound of the original.I'm not aware of any direct, illustrative connection between the music of No other people. and Roussel's book. But I was very struck by the everydayness of Zo's drawings. There is something poignant in his not knowing what he was illustrating. Like the drawings of a blind person. Their banality takes on a mysteriousness by being placed by Roussel in his book, seeming to illustrate bizarre events unknown to Zo.They are impersonal, the people in them unaware that they lead another life in a poem of which they know nothing.Something of this is in the music.Gerald Barry, 2009.
