This is a demo of the Ode to Joy theme in all 13 major keys. Each page contains a 2-voice arrangement of the first 8 measures of the piece in a different key. This unit demonstrates how easily one can play in any key, when the music is notated on a key map tablature.

This piece is notated on a vertically oriented tablature called a key map. Key maps are intended to SHOW you (visually) which keys to play by matching (mapping) the locations of the keys on the keyboard. >>> The group of 12 keys from Middle C up to B form what we call the green Octave Group. (There are 7 of these identical groups on the piano distinguished by their colors and locations.) The key map staff is based on an octave group of the keyboard. For each key map octave group, the 5 vertical lines of the staff stand for the 5 matching black KEYS. >>> Staff lines ARE SPACED to match the horizontal spacing of the black keys on the keyboard The notes for black keys are placed ON these staff lines. The notes for the white keys are placed BETWEEN the lines. >>> The notes of a key map move to the left and right to indicate change in PITCH and down the page to indicate the passing of TIME (rhythm). The vertical length of each note is proportional to the time (in beats) that the sound requires.

The arrangements in Christmas: Songs on the Black Keys are great for new beginner piano students who can read using finger numbers on the black keys, but aren't ready to make the jump to reading with all alpha notes. For example, songs like O Christmas Tree introduce the B and F keys, but keeps the rest of the fingers on the black keys.

Every song has an illustration of the hand position. Notes are color-coded by hand-- green for right hand and red for left hand. Illustrations of each hand are also included at the start of each song which is vital for those pre-school kids that still have trouble telling right from left. The result is a set of songs attractive and playable for beginners of all ages.

Lyrics included with most songs. Some songs contain religious content. Check my profile for the secular version.

Ideal for young beginners who can differentiate fingers and know their numbers, this first book in the series, Part A, contains only songs playable with one hand on one set three black keys. Each song is arranged in finger number notation for right and for left hand. The left-hand notes are colored red as well as turned stem down to assist in differentiating right and left-hand notes. When printed double-sided, the left hand page is on the left side and the right hand page is on the right side. 

I recommend learning these songs in the order given, singing the songs first, then sight reading. Try memorizing each song and try playing them hands together too!

As an added bonus, some helpful worksheets are in the back of the book.
