By Robert Schumann and Yo Yo Ma. By Robert Schumann. Arranged by Flavio Regis Cunha. Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 16 pages. Flavio Regis Cunha #6074553. Published by Flavio Regis Cunha (A0.597444).

Vanitas is a symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death, often contrasting symbols of wealth and symbols of ephemerality and death. Best-known are vanitas still lifes, a common genre in Low countries of the 16th and 17th centuries; they have also been created at other times and in other media and genres.

The Latin noun vanitas (from the Latin adjective vanus 'empty') means 'emptiness', 'futility', or 'worthlessness', the traditional Christian view being that earthly goods and pursuits are transient and worthless. It alludes to Ecclesiastes 1:2; 12:8, where vanitas translates the Hebrew word hevel, which also includes the concept of transitoriness.

The first movement of the composer Robert Schumann's 5 Pieces in a Folk Style, for Cello and Piano, Op. 102 is entitled Vanitas vanitatum: Mit Humor.

The arrangement we present here is a very close transcription of Yo Yo Ma's interpretation with pianist Kathryn Stott, recorded on the album Songs from the Arc of Life.

Original Ad libitum violin part was included.

Advanced Intermediate.
Format: Concert, 9 x 12 inches.

By Artie Shaw. By Hoagy Carmichael. Arranged by Joseph Hasper. Jazz. Score and parts. 27 pages. Joseph Hasper #3563009. Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.734831).

The Hoagy Carmichael signature tune arranged for combo with four horns (trumpet, alto sax, tenor sax, trombone) and rhythm section (piano, bass, and drums).

Key of Db. 80 measures. Includes a full score and complete set of parts.

Stardust was composed in 1927 by Hoagy Carmichael with lyrics added in 1929 by Mitchell Parish. According to Carmichael, the inspiration for Stardust came to him while he was on the campus of his alma mater, Indiana University, in Bloomington, Indiana. He began whistling the tune, then rushed to the Book Nook, a popular student hangout, and started composing. He worked to refine the melody over the course of the next several months.

There have been many interpretations of the standard over the decades, both as a jazz instrumental and as a popular song. Some artists who have recorded Stardust include Bing Crosby, Artie Shaw, Louis Armstrong, Art Tatum, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Django Reinhardt, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Lester Young, Erroll Garner, Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Wynton Marsalis, Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Joni James, Nat King Cole, Mel TormĂ©, Connie Francis, Harry Connick Jr, Ella Fitzgerald, Barry Manilow, Pat Boone, Willie Nelson, George Benson, Al Hirt, and even Bob Dylan.

Composed by James P. Johnson. Arranged by Charles Decker. 20th Century,Broadway,Film/TV,Musical/Show,Pop,Ragtime. 21 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #867780. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.1276031).

From the Music of Black Composers Series at Charles Decker Music Press is the “The Charleston” which debuted in James P. Johnson’s Broadway 1923 show “Runnin’ Wild” to become the wildly popular and unofficial anthem of the Roaring 20’s.  An important jazz pianist and composer, Johnson was a major influence on Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, and Fats Waller.  Arranged for a brass quintet of two B-flat trumpets with alternate C trumpet parts, horn in F with a substitute flugelhorn part, trombone or euphonium and tuba, the arrangement uses the original 1923 piano edition and retains the style of the day. The recording is of the entire edition.

“The Music of Black Composers Series is a welcome and timely addition to the brass repertoire. Interesting music, expertly arranged, fun to perform, and well received by audiences. These pieces are now permanently in my quintet book and I will be using them with my student groups as well. Highly recommended!”   Wesley Nance, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Eastman School of Music

By Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins. By Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh. Arranged by Stewart J Wallace. 20th Century,Barbershop,Broadway,Film/TV,Jazz,Musical/Show. 17 pages. Stewart J Wallace #945722. Published by Stewart J Wallace (A0.1361232).

On The Sunny Side Of The Street was composed in 1930 and was first heard in a Broadway revue which starred Harry Richman and Gertrude Lawrence. The first recordings also appeared in the same year, and it went on to be become a jazz standard, covered by Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, and Art Tatum amongst others. The final bars of this arrangement include a brief tribute to Count Basie, who also recorded the song. The singing needs to light and swinging, with good articulation to the words and accurate placement of the syncopated rhythms. Try to blend the voices so that they sound as one, and aim for a softer, crooning vocal tone, like The Ink Spots or The Andrews Sisters.
