String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 5 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1321588

Composed by Gustav Holst and Marc Chan. Arranged by Marc Chan. 19th Century,21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Wedding. 17 pages. Marc Chan #910062. Published by Marc Chan (A0.1321588).

AFTER HOLST is written for string quartet and intended for advanced players. The work was commissioned by Suzanne Corey-Sahlin for the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra String Quartet, and premiered by them at the Aldrich Museum. AFTER HOLST is based on the ever-popular hymn Jupiter hymn from Gustav Holst's The Planets (also known as Thaxted; also known as I Vow to Thee, My Country). AFTER HOLST is in two movements: the first movement is a straight-forward arrangement of the original. The second movement, to be played immediately after the first, is a contrapuntal exploration of the possibilities inherent in the original, allowing for all four members of the quartet to be in the spotlight. AFTER HOLST is perfect for a string quartet looking for a more interesting arrangement of Gustav Holst's Hymn from Jupiter, something that is challenging but much more satisfying as a piece of music.

Gustav Holst - Folksongs of Hampshire England .   In the early 1900's there was great interest in collecting and preserving the folk songs of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Equipped with their newly invented recording devices, people such as Cecil Sharp, Charles Stanford, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Gustav Holst would travel into the country-side to record, or notate songs being sung. They would frequently use these songs in their own compositions. Holst's music in particular is filled with those songs. This group of four songs was arranged for voice and piano by Holst and set for string orchestra by John Gibson. The songs are 1. Young Edwin in the Lowlands Low 2. Bedlam City 3. The Irish Girl 4. Young Reilly.

The hymn from Gustav Holst's Jupiter from The Planets is also known as I Vow To Thee My Country and Thaxted.

The Planets, Op. 32, is a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst. With the exception of Earth, all the astrological planets known during the work's composition are represented.

Jupiter is the fourth movement from the suite. The movement goes through many different styles, but the part which this arrangement is based on is the hymn tune from Jupiter, called ' I Vow to Thee, My Country '.

Composed by Gustav Holst. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Chamber,Patriotic. 8 pages. RayThompsonMusic #903534. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1314757).

Arranged  wind quintet.

I Vow to Thee, My Country is a British patriotic hymn, created in 1921, when music by Gustav Holst had a poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice set to it.

The music originated as a wordless melody, which Holst later named Thaxted, taken from the Jupiter movement of Holst's 1917 suite The Planets.

The tune is used forWorld in Union – the anthem with lyrics by Charlie Skarbek, introduced at the 1991 Rugby World Cup.

It has been used for many other Christian Hymns.

Notable examples are:

O God Beyond All Praising – Michael Perry, 1982.

We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God – a paraphrase of the Te Deum Laudamus by Stephen P. Starke in the 2006 Lutheran Service Book

The Answer – song with lyrics by Corrinne May, which appears on her fourth album, The Gift.

For the Splendor of Creation – a hymn sung at Harvard Universitycommencement ceremonies.

Building the Kingdom – a recessional hymn sung at St Aloysius College.

O Spirit All-Embracing – Delores Dufner, 1995.

This is my arrangement for wind quintet of Gustav Holst's orchestral arrangement.
It has an opening section, before the melody begins.

Check out my other Holst arrangements.
