The composition uses a variety of saxophone extended techniques, including key slaps and altissimo. Melodic lines constantly shift between parts, and there are significant solo moments for all performers. The frequent use of accents, staccato and shifting dynamics reflect a sense of agitation and anxiety within the opening section, moving gradually towards a steadier and composed feel. The use of altissimo registers in the Alto Saxophone should create a shrill and high pitched layer that contrasts the other performers, adding to the disturbed and unsettled atmosphere within the work.
