Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was a Dutch organist and composer who lived from April 1562 to October 16, 1621. He was born and died in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Sweelinck's first published works date from around 1592-94, and he composed various music, including chansons and keyboard music. He was known for his keyboard playing and was a teacher to German composers Samuel Scheidt and Heinrich Scheidemann.  Sweelinck's Fantasia Chromatica is based on a descending chromatic tetrachord from D to A. It is later developed in many ways, including canons, augmentation, diminution, and double augmentation. The piece forms an essential link between the Renaissance and the Baroque.
