Flee As a Bird is an old Christian hymn written in the 1840's. The hymn lyrics originated from Psalms 11. I've combined it with Sarasate's Spanish Dance Malaguena for a beautiful, updated medley. We start with Flee As a Bird, then the Spanish Dance, switching from minor to major keys throughout. Near the end, the 2 pieces are combined with the piano playing Flee As a Bird and the violin playing the Spanish Dance.The piece ends with the violin playing the last phrase of Flee As a Bird. This would be appropriate for most any setting and is reverent enough to play in a worship service. I hope you enjoy it. It was a fun project.

Moritz Moszkowski (1854- 1925), a cosmopolitan European, proud of his Jewish heritage, was born in Breslau, Prussia (now Poland).  His set of Spanish Dances have been arranged for different Chamber combinations, including The Spanish Dance No 5 (Bolero) which was used in David Lean's film, Brief Encounter (1945).  This piece, Spanish Dance, Op.12, No 1, has also, for good reason, retained its popularity in a number of different musical settings.

Schubert's famous Ave Maria (Dios te salve, Maria) is presented here with the Latin text and two Spanish texts. The first is popularly used for weddings and quinceañeras and is a devotional prayer to Mary. The second Spanish text is the actual prayer set to the same tune, and may be more suitable for services where the Latin prayer translated directly into Spanish is called for.

This collection of seven songs is inspired by Spanish folk and flamenco music. Each song is representative of a different style or genre, including dances, romances, work, and religious and songs. Spain has a long history of folk music dating back to the Middle Ages; a tradition that is still very much alive today. The music has been influenced by many different cultures over the centuries and has been the inspiration for musicians across the world.

Songs

1.Sevillanas are a type of folk song and associated dance for couples, originating in the nineteenth century. Today they are still very popular, particularly at fiestas and  other social events.

2.Cabaliño is a Galician work song about a young horse, arranged in the style of a flamenco tango.

3. La Petenera is  a combination of two songs in very different styles - a flamenco Petenera from Andalucía and a Mexican son huasteco, a genre that is noteworthy for its flamboyant and virtuoso violin parts.

4. Saetas are religious songs that are performed at Easter (Semana Santa).

5.There are many hundreds of versions of the old folk tale Gerineldo, telling the story of love between a Queen and her page boy. This Spanish/Jewish version is over 500 years old, from the time when the Moors ruled over much of the Iberian Peninsula.

6.Villancico Asturiano is a traditional Christmas carol from Asturias, combined with a setting of a Christmas poem written in the seventeenth century by Robert Herrick for King Charles II of England.

7.The lyrics from La Tarara are drawn from the poem of the same name by the Spanish poet Federico Lorca, who based his poem on a traditional children´s playground song. La Tarara is a mystical woman who dances around the countryside.  The music in this version is in the style of a Tanguillo – a type of flamenco dance from Cadiz.

Spanish Flea is a popular song written by Julius Wechter in the 1960s with lyrics by his wife Cissy Wechter. The original version was recorded by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Cover versions of the song have been recorded by dozens of artists worldwide.

Julius Wechter was a percussionist in Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, most notably on marimba. Spanish Flea was one of several songs he wrote for the group. It was released as an instrumental on the B-side to the single What Now My Love from their 1965 album Going Places. The album was a No. 1 hit in the U.S., and the single peaked at No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. Spanish Flea featured Alpert's trumpet over a Latin rhythm backing.

The original version was recorded on August 13, 1965 at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Two other songs were recorded during that session, those being And I Love Her and More And More Amor. In the United States, the song is closely associated with the long-running game show The Dating Game, for which it was played when the bachelor entered into the stage to ask questions to learn and choose which bachelorette had best suited the needs of that bachelor.
