Canons Firing From an Ever Rising Staircase, Or, Heed the Effer's Frantic Calls  This is the 1st movement of a piece for clarinet choir written by John Gibson called Klarifications. The complete is also available. This movement is set for solo Eb clarinet; Bb clarinets 1,2, and 3; 2 Alto clarinets (with alternate Bb parts); 2 Bass clarinets; Bb Contrabass clarinet (with an alternate Eb Contra Alto part). To explain the title just a bit, the ever rising staircase is an aural trick that, if done precisely, sounds like the music keeps rising without really doing so.  This was derived from what is called a Shepard's Tone. The canons firing are not cannons! The bass instruments play small sections of actual canons (like fancy rounds) written by J S Bach, Mozart, and others. Each time the solo Eb clarinet (the Effer) announces the coming canon firing in a frantic sort of way.  Considering the Eb clarinet part, and the need for the Bb clarinets to carry the rising staircase, this is for an advanced group. It runs a little over 3 minutes in length. The recording is computer generated, although I plan to record a live version someday.

Composed by William Ortiz. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 123 pages. William Ortiz #6093209. Published by William Ortiz (A0.1008998).

Subtitled An urban pastiche, Del Caserío combines abstract sections of what I call sonic graffiti with popular Latin and Rock music riffs, which are most likely heard in a Caserío (a low-income housing community).
The graffiti episodes are interrupted suddenly by these dance motives. This process is a musical metaphor for the dichotomy of present-day urban life. The work is scored to reflect the sound world and the emotional distress of a marginated society. But at the same time, it underlines and conveys the enthusiasm, energy and joyfulness that embodies this astonishing culture.

CASEY JONES - 6 GUITARS or LARGE ENSEMBLE
The Ballad of Casey Jones - most famously used as the Theme Music to the TV series Casey Jones.

Derek Hasted writes This is a great piece for six or more guitars, especially for those with limited experience of playing in ensemble.

Schoolteachers - this is ideal for a school ensemble of mixed ability players, as there are parts from 'very much a novice' up to intermediate (which the teacher can help support).

My arrangement sets out to make classical guitars sound like a steam locomotive - I hope you find that it works better than you imagined!

The slow introduction and the gathering speed doesn’t require a collective accelerando, it’s all done in the writing - the metronome mark stays the same.

Be sure to accent the beats where shown, and keep that pulsing accent rippling through the entire piece.

Guitar 6 requires the bottom string tuned down to D - as this is the line suited to those with the least experience, you might want to mark up the fret numbers for the bass notes below the open A - they are all two frets higher than they normally are.

This piece has featured in concerts played by The Hampshire Guitar Orchestra, and it’s always gone down well.

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!
