In gleich zwei Fassungen hat der renommierte libanesisch-französische Komponist Naji Hakim seine Komposition Laetatus sum für gemischten Chor (SATB) und Orgel (2. Orgel ad lib.) vorgelegt, die hier in nur einer Notenausgabe vereint sind. Neben einer vollständigen Vertonung des 122. Psalms, die für feierliche Introitus und Prozessionen sowie festliche Pontifikal-Vespern und Konzerte gleichermaßen gut geeignet ist, findet sich auch eine gekürzte Fassung dieses Psalms Davids. Sie ist hervorragend als feierliches Introitus (oder Offertorium) an Sonntagen im Jahreskreis zu verwenden. Das bis zu achtstimmige Werk entstand als Auftragskomposition zum 150-jährigen Bestehen des Knabenchors am Kölner Dom und wurde in einer „Orgelfeierstunde des Kölner Doms 2015 uraufgeführt. In der Tat lässt sich Hakims besondere Affinität zur Orgel auch hier nicht leugnen. Der mit zahlreichen Orgel- und Kompositionspreisen dekorierte Langlais-Schüler sieht für die höchst anspruchsvolle und umfangreiche Orgelpartie dieses lateinischsprachigen Chorwerks gleich zwei Orgeln vor. Da sie aber nicht gleichzeitig, sondern stets im Wechsel zum Einsatz kommen, kann der gesamte Part auch auf nur einer Orgel gespielt werden. Beide Versionen dieses mit Taktwechseln nur so gespickten Psalms setzen bei Chor wie Organist(en) ein hohes Maß an musikalischem Können voraus.

Vytautas Laurušas (geb. 1930) studierte am Staatlichen Konservatorium für Musik (jetzt Litauische Akademie für Musik). Von 1963 bis 1975 war er Direktor und Künstlerischer Leiter des Litauischen Opern- und Balletttheaters, von 1975 bis 1983 Vorsitzender des Litauischen Komponistenverbandes und von 1983 bis 1994 Rektor der Litauischen Akademie für Musik. Seit 1994 ist er Professor für Komposition am gleichen Institut. Vokalwerke und Kammermusik bilden den Kern seines kompositorischen Schaffens. In seinen Werken verwendet er eine ganze Reihe verschiedener Kompositionstechniken, wie freie Zwölftontechnik, aleatorische Elemente, Minimalismus und traditionellere Formen. Diese musikalische Vielfalt findet sich auch in Concento. Original für zwei Bratschen komponiert, gibt es jetzt auch eine Einrichtung für zwei Celli von dem berühmten Cellisten David Geringas. Als Ergänzung zum spärlichen, vorwiegend klassischen Repertoire ist dieses erfrischend unkonventionelle Stück eine echte Bereicherung. Text von David Geringas: Als ich das erste Mal Vytautas Laurušas’ Concento di corde hörte, war ich sofort von dem eindrucksvollen Werk begeistert. Viele der bevorzugten Kompositionstechniken des Komponisten finden sich auch in dieser Arbeit wieder. Der erste Satz verwickelt die beiden Instrumente in einer Kombination unterschiedlichster Techniken - Aleatorik, Minimalismus, freie Tonalität und traditionelle Formen - in dichte lyrische Dialoge. Nicht zuletzt durch die emotionale Gestik der beiden mal stark aufeinander bezogenen, mal scheinbar unabhängig voneinander geführten Stimmen wird eine permanent wachsende, dramatische Spannung erzeugt. Die so entstandene Intensität entlädt sich mit dem Beginn des zweiten Satzes in mitreißende Virtuosität. Die beiden Presto-Teile dieses Satzes markieren die jeweiligen Höhepunkte der aus unaufhaltsam permutierenden Tonfiguren entstandenen Aktivität. Erst gegen Ende beruhigt sich das Geschehen wieder und die Instrumenten-Protagonisten klingen auf dem gleichen Ton im unisono aus. Auf meine Anregung hin, hat Laurušas das ursprünglich für zwei Violen geschriebenen Concento di corde für zwei Celli eingerichtet. Zum einen eröffnet der sonore Klang der tieferen Streichinstrumente dem Stück eine zusätzliche Dimension, zum anderen bereichert es das Duett-Repertoire für Violoncelli auf äußerst interessante und vielfältige Weise. Marian Variations for harp solo was written for and is dedicated to harpist Ruth Inglefield, Professor of Harp at the Peabody Conservatory. In 1975, I was a student in Dr. Inglefield's Music History class at Bowling Green State University, where I was pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Composition. Dr. Inglefield arranged for me to study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, which I did from 1975-78, making me one of her last composition students and utterly changing my life. This piece is written in gratitude for Dr. Inglefield's vision and generosity.

The work is based on my own Ave Maria for SATB chorus which was commissioned in 1991 by the San Francisco male vocal ensemble Chanticleer. Each of the four variations is based on the main melody of the Ave Maria and is separated by interludes built of contrasting material, all leading to a literal statement of the motet after the fourth variation. Thus, though the piece is largely intended for use in solo recitals, it could be played as part of a liturgical service where the motet is also sung.

I am grateful to Sonja Inglefield for her expert and detailed editing of the score. Harpists Steve Main and Michael Rado also offered valuable suggestions. -David Conte.

The music video was filmed in Santa Monica and in West Hills, California in August 2008. Directed by Alessandro D'Alatri and starring former contestant on Survivor: Cook Island Oscar Lusth and fashion model Krystal Davidsohn, the video shows how difficult it is for a soldier to return to every day life.

It was released on the web on 22 October 2008.

It talks about a longing for a person. The music talks about things that were not said and old memories.
