They are called time preludes because each one focuses on a different way of handling the progress of musical time. For example, some contrast different lengths of note groupings while maintaining a consistent tempo, while others rely on changing tempos, on the use of accelerating and decelerating figures, or on the use of much rubato. The result is that they flow naturally, without the rigidity or predictability of traditional meters, while their imagery inspires pianists and audience members to let their imaginations roam.

About 6 minutes in length, the Preludes are jazzy, bluesy and a lot of fun to play, plus, very entertaining for audiences.  This transcription, in bass clef is suitable for advanced performers with a range from a low C# to high D's.  Prelude No. 1 has a bluesy motif with a strong jazz feel.  Prelude No. 2, Blue Melody, is a sad song also with a blues feel using lots of sevenths and a major/minor duality.  Prelude No. 3,  Spanish Prelude features lots of syncopations and a battle between major & minor with the major winning out in the end.  This work will make a fantastic addition to your recital.

The pieces consist of a prelude followed by a fugue and are short and compact. The preludes are mainly in a two-part contrapuntal style, with occasional triplets and dotted rhythms adding variety and interest. The fugues are more complex and show Bach's ability to write complex counterpoint and intricate contrapuntal textures. These pieces are great for teaching and performing and provide an excellent introduction to Bach's music.
