First, the audio is from Finale and it is difficult to make it play like a human. There should be much more freedom and flexibility in the melody line. This is such a beautiful and romantic song that is great for weddings, prelude, ceremony or any special occasion. I have featured the viola with the melody throughout the song. I have followed the Lea Solange version instead of the Vanessa Williams version. It seemed to suit the string quartet better. It goes from G minor to G major. All players will have to shift so this is not for beginners. This would also make a great encore showpiece for a professional string quartet that wants to use popular material.

E lucevan le stelle (When the stars were brightly shining) is the romanza of Mario Cavaradossi, the tenor, a painter in love with Tosca, in the third act of Puccini's opera Tosca, composed in 1899 to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It is sung by Cavaradossi while he waits for his execution on the roof of Castel Sant’Angelo.  The aria is introduced by a somber clarinet solo. The incipit of the melody (heard in outline earlier in the act, as the sky lightens and the gaoler prepares for the execution) is repeated on the lines O dolci baci, o languide carezze (With sweetest kisses, tenderest caresses), and also restated in forte in the closing bars of the opera, as Tosca jumps from the ramparts. The piece was originally composed for trumpet and strings, however, Saint-Preux had heard French singer Danielle Licari rehearsing in another studio and ended up deciding to record it with her voice as the trumpet part, using a vocal technique similar to scat singing of jazz.
