He wrote the organ version specifically for this performance for he had originally planned an orchestral accompaniment. That, however, could only be completed later and was eventually premiered in 1853. In a letter to Schumann, Herrmann Langer, the conductor of both world premieres, mentioned 'the wonderful effect which the same has produced' and that, to him, 'the motet was one of the most stimulating and inspiring creations in male-voice literature'.

Try using various combinations of these instruments, depending on what you have available, or use piano alone. This anthem is ideal for an introit, or perhaps a prayer response.

The Atlas was carrying a load of limestone meant for the U.S. government harbor in Oswego on the day of its fateful journey in May, 1839. Only two miles from port, a gale-force wind rocked the ship and its heavy load shifted, causing the vessel to sink and all of its crew members to perish. This piece was written to portray the majesty of Lake Ontario as well as the brave sailors, young and old, who navigated her volatile waters. Based on the tune HERZLICH TUT MICH VERLANGEN by Renaissance composer Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612), this partita consists of six movements. Chorale settings frame inner movements that employ doleful ostinatos, a quasi-canon, and a bicinium that turns into a trio at the cadences. With anguished and unconventional harmonies, the work begins fortissimo on a second inversion of an F major seventh chord and ends pianissimo eight minutes later on an A major chord. Originally composed for organ, this partita works well for strings and is particularly suited for Lent, Holy Week, or communion services. A compatible edition is available for Woodwind Quintet.
