Mehr als ein Dutzend großer Bühnen im In- und Ausland setzten im Jahr der Dresdner Uraufführung von Richard Strauss’ Komödie für Musik Der Rosenkavalier das Werk auf ihre Spielpläne – der Beginn eines Siegeszuges ohnegleichen. Strauss selbst half mit den beiden Walzerfolgen (1911/12) und der Musik zum Rosenkavalier-Film von Robert Wiene (1926), die Musik auch außerhalb des Theaters bekannt zu machen. Die Idee, sein eigenes Regiekonzept in Verbindung mit den Kostüm- und Bühnenbildentwürfen Alfred Rollers als bindende Musterinszenierung zu etablieren, konnte Strauss nur in Dresden, München, Berlin, Wien und Mailand durchsetzen. Gleichwohl wirkten Rollers einem idealisierten Rokoko verhaftete Entwürfe bis in die 60er Jahre stilbildend. Erst dann begannen Regisseure und Ausstatter, mit aufregend kritischen, neuen Deutungen die Doppelbödigkeit des Werkes zu entdecken und es, beispielsweise mit einem analytischen Blick auf die Entstehungszeit kurz vor Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs, in unsere Gegenwart zu holen.

March of the Morose Camels—Why morose? Wouldn’t you be?

Camels is a Grade 1 march written for young bands and portrays the
image of camels marching through the desert under a hot sun. It starts far
away. As they get closer and closer, the caravan gets louder and louder.
Those that have been around camels, know how loud they can get!

All wind parts are easily within a Grade 1 and playable by 1st-year players. Percussion is much busier (8 players) than some Grade I but it is easily playable. The timpani uses 3 pitches and there are no pitch changes.

Instrumental duo based on an anonymous 15th century macaronic song about a girl who was made pregnant, and then abandoned, by a cleric. The melody is taken by the guitar in with variations in the middle, while the melody instrument has a countermelody, and then, in the final section, the melody instruments provides a few divisions. The sound sample is an electronic preview For interest here are the words of the original song with my translation of the Latin bits: Up I arose in verno tempore [in springtime] and found a maiden sub quadam arbore [under some tree] that did complain in suo pectore [in her bosom] saying I feel puerum movere [the little boy moving] Adieu pleasures antiquo tempore, [in times gone by] full oft with you solebam ludere. [I used to play] but for my sins mihi deridere [they hold me in derision] with right good cause incipio flere [I start to weep] Now what shall I say meis parentibus, [to my parents] because I lay with quidam clericus [some man of the cloth] They will beat me cum virgis et fustibus [with sticks and clubs] and me sore chaste coram omnibus [in front of everybody] With the said child quid faciam [what shall I do] shall I it keep vel interficiam [or kill it] If I slay it quo loco fugiam [where shall I flee to] I shall lose God et vitam eternam [and eternal life].
