Shall We Gather at The River was composed in 1865 by a Baptist minister from New York, Robert Lowry. Odessa Bulgar is a Jewish Folk tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for one Trumpet and one Tenor Saxophone.

For many traditional Klezmer tunes, the first clues of their existence comes from bands making discs at the dawn of the recording era. In this case, Odessa Bulgar first appeared in a 1919 recording by Abe Schwartz’s Orchestra. Schwartz was born in Romania and emigrated to the USA around 1900, thereafter enjoying a long career in the music industry. Odessa Bulgar is a happy piece designed for dancing at celebrations.

Odessa Bulgar is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is in three sections; overall the tune is played twice with a coda and with constant variations in the accompaniment. Odessa Bulgar is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. Silver Wedding, (Die Silberne Khasene in Yiddish), is a Jewish Folk tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for one Trumpet and one Tenor Saxophone.

Jewish Wedding bands, prominent in early twentieth century New York, were well placed to take advantage of the phonograph recording revolution. Accordingly, we are fortunate to have a rich record of the musical style of the time. Silver Wedding first appeared in a 1915 recording by Abe Elenkrig’s Orchestra. Elenkrig was born in Ukraine, which may point to the origins of the tune. Silver Wedding is in a Bulgar style, a happy piece designed to escort the newly-weds from the ceremony to the feast.

The melody is in three sections; overall the tune is played twice with a short introduction and coda and with constant variations in the accompaniment. Satie wrote this very popular melody, known as Gymnopédies No 1, in 1888 for piano solo. It is arranged here for a Solo Saxophone. It is perhaps his most well known melody. The arrangement makes it possible to hear the suggested harmonies. Normally the piece works best with an accompaniement. However in this form a 2nd voice is not needed. Many key signature options are also provided, along with a fakechart for Jazz scenarios.
