PREFACE

These eight suites for solo recorder are amongst the relatively fewcompositions by Daniel de Moivre that have survived for us through the centuries.
Not very much is known of the life of this composer, except that hewas a French Huguenot, the younger brother of the well-known French mathematician Abraham de Moivre, with whom he movedfrom France to England after their imprisonment in France for being protestants, and it is recorded that they both became denizens ofGreat Britain on 16/12/1687. It seems that both brothers earn their livings mostly by teaching in their respective subjects for the rest of their lives. Daniel de Moivre had early training in France in recorderand composition, and in England he was known as one of the bestrecorder players at the time, together with Paisible, Banister Loilet and others.
The solo suites that follow are of moderate technical difficulty andform a good basis for advancing the recorder technique to higher levels. But primarily are well made baroque dance tunes that can beused for both study and recreation.

All ornaments are marked as trills starting usually on the upper note,but some of them can be interpreted as mordents or inverted mordents.
There are quite a few baroque-rondeau movements withinthese suites, marked with double bar lines but without repeats.
Repeats are optional here, and it depends on personal aesthetics. I find the following scheme of playing baroque- rondeau movements quite satisfactory: AA-BB-A-CC-A
Legato marks and other slurs were not included in the original andare left to the performer’s decision.
All tempi are only editorial suggestions which can be ignored to a reasonable degree.

This volume has been created with decorated and undecorated pages and with individual front covers for each suite so that the user can add or omit pages at will and create his own book designs.
The mp3 sample contains various movements from all suites.

This book provides recorderists, flutists and guitarists interesting and entertaining music to play. Songs and instrumental pieces from the middle ages to the present have been chosen with regard to their educational and intrinsically musical value, and arranged with careful consideration to provide idiomatic parts for each instrument, while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original. Educators will find this book to be of value in their teaching. Ensemble playing is a pleasant and effective way to increase assurance of rhythm and pitch. The difficulty of these pieces range from lower to upper intermediate levels. Sometimes the recorder/flute part is easier than the guitar part, sometimes vice-versa. For the more advanced recorderist/flutist, variations in the proper style have been added to some pieces for further technical study, and as examples for improvisation.

Concerto in modo antico (2011) for recorder and strings was commissioned by and is dedicated to recorderist John Turner. The five movements of the work draw upon stylistic elements of Medieval and Renaissance music. I. Estampie II. Aria III. Echo Gigue IV. Ground (in memoriam Lee Hoiby) V. Estampie da capo Orchestra details: A small string orchestra is suggested. String quintet may be used if necessary (although the first violin part in the second movement will be nearly entirely double stops). Though it is not preferred, the recorder may be discretely amplified if necessary, particularly if using a large string orchestra. A piano reduction is provided primarily for rehearsal purposes. If absolutely necessary, the work may be performed in concert with piano, although the string scoring is vastly preferred.

12 Solo Quadrilles for Recorders in C (treble clef)

Originally written for small orchestras or piano, our arrangements for solo recorders in C work so well that it is hard to believe that  the pieces weren’t written for the recorder in the first place.

Quadrilles were fashionable dances of the late 18th to19th Centuries, performed by four couples in a rectangular formation. They consist of four to six movements (or contredanses, courtly versions of English country dances that had been taken up at the court of Louis XIV and spread across Europe.) and became a craze during the 19th century.

Though hundreds of quadrille sets were composed in the 19th , the names of the five parts (or figures) remained the same, as did the steps and the figures themselves:

James Hook was born in Norwich. He displayed a remarkable musical talent at an early age, playing the harpsichord by the age of four and performing concertos in public at age six. He began performing regularly by the time he was 10 years old, including benefit concerts. He held many jobs to earn money, including teaching, composing, transcribing music and tuning keyboard instruments.

In 1763/64 he moved to London where he worked as an organist, teacher and composer, and gained a reputation for composing vocal music. After the death of his first wife, he married Harriet Horncastle James in 1806.  It was at this time that he produced his best work, Tekeli, or the Siege of Montgatz.

In 1820 he unexpectedly left his position at Vauxhall, after almost a half century of service, and he died seven years later in Boulogne.

5 Jazz Trios is a fun, flexible and original collection of Trios written in a Jazz style by David McKeown for three Recorders. The pdf file contains the scores, separate parts for three Soprano/Descants, and also alternative parts for Alto/Treble and Tenor Recorders. There are chord symbols in concert pitch on the scores for additional accompaniment on piano, bass or guitar.

5 Jazz Trios are suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. The key and range are accessible and there are some simple syncopated rhythms and accidentals.
