A sequence for clarinet and guitar based on three Viennese songs from the 1840s and 1850s
interspersed with three original yodels.


The melodies of the old songs, originally taken from the book Wiener Lieder und Tänze and then expanded, are:
1. O Theures Erbsien - a moralistic song about avoiding crime and thus prison (it appears that the old Viennese prison was called Erbsien after the principal diet of the prisoners there: Erbsen = peas)

2. Servicerl 
A celebration of drinking and courting.

3. Mein Nachbarin und I 
A song about getting on well with the widow next door....

The original yodels were initially inspired by some of the sections marked Jodel in the same book.

Nimrod, is the ninth of the Enigma Variations composed by Edward Elgar in 1899. Here, the music is arranged for Clarinet and Viola Duet, directly from the orchestral score. Elgar wrote fourteen variations on a theme, each one depicting close friends and family. Nimrod represents his publisher and friend Augustus Jaeger. The biblical character of Nimrod is described as a mighty hunter, and jaeger means hunter in German.

Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. Both parts require dramatic dynamic contrasts and lyrical legato playing. This arrangement is based on the original publication from William Walker's Southern Harmony where the music is basically a 3 voices choral and this arrangement is almost just a transcription to clarinet and piano. The melody has little changes as the way it is interpreted today but keeps almost the same harmony from the original. It is written in a straight easy way for players to enjoy. Although the title of the piece comes from the hymn written by John Newton this is only an instrumental arrangement.

Steal Away to Jesus is an American nineteenth century spiritual. This version is arranged as a duet for one Violin and one Clarinet.

The words and music of Steal Away to Jesus are credited to Wallis Willis, a Native American freedman from Oklahoma. A local minister transcribed the song and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite. The words have a meaning beyond the spiritual, with hidden references to the Underground Railway of the time that helped escaped slaves cross to Canada. In more recent times Steal Away to Jesus was arranged by Michael Tippett in 1944 and recorded famously by Mahalia Jackson and Nat King Cole.
