In the late ‘50s just a handful of national TV shows in the US had a huge influence on the music and dance crazes of the time. Artists and dances came and went with dizzying speed. Chalypso was a short-lived craze in 1958 that combined the music of the new Rock’n’Roll with much-simplified steps borrowed from Cha Cha and Calypso; and no sooner had it caught on than it was itself supplanted by The Twist. Chocolate Chalypso is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by some syncopated rhythms and accidentals. With a playing-time of around one and a half minutes, Chocolate Chalypso is a perfect upbeat addition to any performance program, formal or informal. Vesper for Baritone Saxophone and Piano is a dark modal work intended for advanced performers.  In beginning this work, I attempted to create a dark and beautiful melody in several lesser explored modes.  While by itself the melody is quite interesting, the addition of the piano accompaniment and the setting make the strange feel more familiar.  As the piece moves into the middle section, the melody and harmony also move to a more familiar major setting.  Although dark in nature, the playful melody is meant to display a solemn beauty much like an old orthodox vesper.
