Ding Dong Merrily on High for Alto Saxophone and Piano

The tune of this traditional Christmas carol was written by Thoinot Arbeau (1519-1593). Then later George Ratcliffe Woodward (1848-1934) harmonised it and set the lyrics to the tune, then published in 1924 . In my arrangement I have reharmonised the original tune by Arbeau (with no lyrics) and added a counter melody.

Probably the best known of Scott Joplin’s piano rags, The Entertainer was written in 1902. It was included on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and an orchestration featured on the soundtrack of the movie The Sting in 1973. This arrangement won an Oscar and reached No.3 on the US single charts.

This version for Soprano Saxophone with Piano accompaniment has been arranged to best suit the key and pitch of the solo instrument and includes all four sections of the original composition. The pdf file contains both the piano accompaniment and the separate solo part. The linked full-length youtube performance is the Clarinet version of this arrangement.

Steal Away to Jesus is an American nineteenth century spiritual. This version is arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Alto Saxophone.

The words and music of Steal Away to Jesus are credited to Wallis Willis, a Native American freedman from Oklahoma. A local minister transcribed the song and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite. The words have a meaning beyond the spiritual, with hidden references to the Underground Railway of the time that helped escaped slaves cross to Canada. In more recent times Steal Away to Jesus was arranged by Michael Tippett in 1944 and recorded famously by Mahalia Jackson and Nat King Cole.
