Miss Trombonism by African American composer, trombonist, bandleader and publisher Nathaniel Cleophas Shorty Davis was written in 1918 as a Trombone solo in the American genre of Ragtime featuring the trombone's patented glissando as the hook. These solos were also called smears or jazzes. Miss Trombonism is one of five entertaining works of Davis' Trombone Family written between 1915 and 1921 with the subtitle - A Slippery Tune. The granddaughter of Oh Slip It Man and daughter of Mr. Trombonology.  This arrangement has been wonderfully arranged by Aaron Hettinga for Trombone and Piano and is playable by moderately advanced performers. Cherry Classics Music will be publishing the complete series of these works by Davis. Thanks to Douglas Yeo for his research and advice.

Mr. Israel commissioned the work and worked closely with the composer during the composition process. The piece is demanding for both trombonist and pianist.Naming the piece was relatively straightforward, as the composer intended from the outset to use the English translation of the Hebrew word and Mr. Israel's first name 'Shachar' (in Hebrew, 'shachar' means 'dawn'). The title, taken from a passage in the Book of Psalms, is intended to represent the energy and beauty present in the few moments before dawn breaks.The piece begins with a lyrical trombone line, floating over a minimalistic piano accompaniment. Making the most of the trombone's pitch and dynamic range, the trombone becomes increasingly agitated and the piano accompaniment more fragmented. A frenetic passage leads into a fast, aggressive section before returning to the opening melodies.Mr. Israel recorded the piece in 2018 at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio with the marvelous Martha Locker on piano. The recording was produced by the Grammy award-winning Elaine Martone. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792231). John Frith began composing the `Sonata for Bass Trombone and Piano` for Stephen Fissel of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra in 2008. Originally it was intended to write only a single movement. When Mr. Fissel requested more did the idea of a three movement Sonata begin to take shape. In order to create a cohesive piece, Mr. Frith decided to use the opening Trombone figure of F-E-F as the thread to create a thematic unity within the three movement structure. The Piano introduction to the slow second movement bears this `motto` in reverse (EFE) and this is duly adopted by the Trombone and continues to be evident throughout the movement. The third movement, likewise, uses (EFE) but this time beginning with the Trombone. The composer remembers describing this movement to Stephen Fissel as a manic Waltz and it does,indeed, reach fever-pitch by the Coda. The relationship between the two instruments in this Sonata is never that of soloist and accompanist, rather as a conversation between two equal players, each in partnership with the composer’s ideas, committed to creating something of beauty.The work is written for very advanced performers and is about 14 minutes in length.
