Here is a brief description of this very fine new work, The Secret of Ben Søgen for Bass Trombone and Piano by the composer, Elizabeth Raum: I’ve always been fascinated by the Nordic heroes that appear in comic books and video games like Thor or Odin. Years ago, I wrote a concerto for tuba called The Legend of Heimdall inspired by Scandinavian folklore, and for this new work for bass trombone, I found myself drawn to the Danish mythical character, Ben Søgen. My concept was to conjure up a video game champion who goes through various adventures to achieve his final quest. However, the Secret of Ben Søgen is that he doesn’t exist. I made him up. My original title was Bone Quest, a pun on the word, trombone, combined with Quest but that didn’t evoke the image I wanted so I decided to create a character from the Danish translation of Bone Quest. Thus Ben Søgen. The Hero Bass Trombonist has a theme stated in the beginning, and this motif continues through a variety of backgrounds (or adventures) before the final major key of his goal being achieved. The work is about 7 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers. This work has been edited for bass trombone by Gordon Cherry.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792231). John Frith began composing the `Sonata for Bass Trombone and Piano` for Stephen Fissel of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra in 2008. Originally it was intended to write only a single movement. When Mr. Fissel requested more did the idea of a three movement Sonata begin to take shape. In order to create a cohesive piece, Mr. Frith decided to use the opening Trombone figure of F-E-F as the thread to create a thematic unity within the three movement structure. The Piano introduction to the slow second movement bears this `motto` in reverse (EFE) and this is duly adopted by the Trombone and continues to be evident throughout the movement. The third movement, likewise, uses (EFE) but this time beginning with the Trombone. The composer remembers describing this movement to Stephen Fissel as a manic Waltz and it does,indeed, reach fever-pitch by the Coda. The relationship between the two instruments in this Sonata is never that of soloist and accompanist, rather as a conversation between two equal players, each in partnership with the composer’s ideas, committed to creating something of beauty.The work is written for very advanced performers and is about 14 minutes in length. Romance is harmonically fluid, modulating between tonal centres, specifically around Gb and Db major. The searching for the work’s home key reflects a yearning to find something more. The theme is developed as the work goes on, becoming more longing, exploring the trombone’s higher register to evoke a passionate desire to find completeness. The work comes to an end, wavering between Db and D major, before finally settling in the work’s opening key.
