Roger T. Petrich (1938-2022) dedicated his three-movement Sonatina for Trumpet in C and Piano, a work from 1962 to his father. The introductory first movement recalling the ritornello form is followed by a quiet, slow movement. The recurring tone repetitions lend the third movement the character of a fanfare.

Petrich studied composition with Pulitzer prizewinning composer Leo Sowerby and under Ernst Pepping in Berlin.

The Sonatina was recorded by trumpeter Paul Neebe and organist Ulrich Knoerr in 2003. The CD is titled Te Deum under the label MDG.

The 10 minute long work is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

The work is based on a series of alternating sudden gestures of dynamic contrast with lyrical
lines. The harmonic material consists of a shifting pattern of the modes.

Pictures at an Exhibition was originally written as a suite in ten movements for Piano in 1874. It has become a showpiece for virtuoso Pianists and further known through a number of orchestrations and arrangements with Maurice Ravel's being the most performed by far.

Ralph Sauer's landmark arrangement very successfully captures the spirit of the composition by carefully planning rests and managing the technical split between Trumpeter and Pianist.

This arrangement is about 30+ minutes in length and playable by advanced performers. It is a major new addition to the Trumpet repertoire.

Pepito is a brisk Mexican mariachi polka in E-flat concert (F major for trumpet). The pretty melody from the Theme is kicked up a notch on the Variation, with double-tongue passages and some trills for good measure. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. But more recently many have questioned whether the composer was in fact Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. What is known is that the piece was written for a semi-opera called The Island Princess, and that both men contributed music to the production. In recent years this piece has become a popular wedding favourite.

 This full version is arranged as a duet for Trumpet and Trombone and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored.
