Salsa de Shibby is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Trumpets.

This duet is based on the style of Salsa. The name Salsa was first used in 1960s New York to describe the popular and commercial dance music made by Latin emigrés in the city. Most of the musical and structural ideas came straight from Cuban Son Montuno, but the lack of one single traditional root has allowed musicians from different Latin American countries to bring their own flavours to the music. Given the tensions between the US and Cuba, there have been accusations of cultural appropriation and Cubans dislike the word Salsa, but there is no denying the music’s worldwide appeal.

If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Rhythms should be lightly articulated, the melody should always flow, and following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. Go Down Moses is an Afro-American Spiritual Song. This version is arranged as a duet for two Trumpets.

Go Down Moses was first published in 1853 after Afro-American Contraband regiments sang it during the American Civil War. In the recording age Go Down Moses was made famous by Paul Robeson and Louis Armstrong. William Faulkner named a novel after the song and there is a memorable performance in the 1941 film, Sullivan’s Travels.

Kandel’s Hora is a Jewish dance tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for two Trumpets.

Kandel’s Hora was written and named after Harry Kandel. Born in Lvov, and after a short period in the Russian army, Kandel emigrated to the USA in 1905 and quickly found work as a clarinettist in vaudeville, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show and JP Sousa’s band. A brief but productive period as band-leader and recording artist followed, after which Kandel retired from performing to run a music shop.

Kandel’s Hora is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. A slow Hora in triple meter is followed by a faster Freylach version of the same melody in 4. Kandel’s Hora is suitable for players at an advanced intermediate level and above. The Chocolate Chalypso is a fun and original duet written by David McKeown for two Trumpets.

Chocolate Chalypso is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. In the late ‘50s just a handful of national TV shows in the US had a huge influence on the music and dance crazes of the time. Artists and dances came and went with dizzying speed. Chalypso was a short-lived craze in 1958 that combined the music of the new Rock’n’Roll with much-simplified steps borrowed from Cha Cha and Calypso; and no sooner had it caught on than it was itself supplanted by The Twist. 

Chocolate Chalypso is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by some syncopated rhythms and accidentals. With a playing-time of around one and a half minutes, Chocolate Chalypso is a perfect upbeat addition to any performance program, formal or informal.
