The Prince of Denmark’s March is better known nowadays as the Trumpet Voluntary and is often used in wedding ceremonies. It was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop.  Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard.

This full version is arranged as a duet for Trumpet and Clarinet and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, with both parts enjoying melodic interest.

A feisty, one movement work for both Grade 8 trumpeters and organists. It is principally in the dorian mode but does venture in the development, during which the trumpet is unusually muted. The Vivace was premiered on the 23rd April 2000 for the procession of the Lord Bishop of Whitby and dedicated to composer and choral director, Tim Knight.

But more recently many have questioned whether the composer was in fact Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. What is known is that the piece was written for a semi-opera called The Island Princess, and that both men contributed music to the production. In recent years this piece has become a popular wedding favourite.

Here is an excellent description of the 24 Lyric Preludes for Trumpet and Piano by the composer, David Evan Thomas:

24 Lyric Preludes for Trumpet and Piano is a unified cycle of 24 contrasting pieces in all major and minor keys and may be played in sequence, by book, or excerpted in any order that makes musical sense. As in Chopin's 24 Préludes for piano, each major key is paired with its relative minor. But the 24 Lyric Preludes move softly down a descending ladder of thirds and flat-wise around the circle of fifths. Many aspects of the trumpeter's stock-in-trade are explored-double-tonguing, lip slurs, extremes of range and volume-as well as references to rhythms, patterns, and problems encountered by the orchestral player. The tonal spectrum may be widened further through judicious use of cornet and flugelhorn and creative choice of mutes. While there are a few notable links between movements (e.g., the Improvisation to the Nocturne; the return of the Prelude tune in the Finale), each piece deals with a characteristic style or musical idea, and most stand on their own. The piano is an equal partner throughout.
