It shares a rhythmic motif with another of my pieces, Fallen for unaccompanied tuba, both of which were written at the same time and influenced each other as a sort of positive/negative experience, this being the positive and brighter of the two pieces. These etudes received first prize in the Tuba Universal Brotherhood Association’s 1996 Composition Competition. The etudes are published in duet form in order for them to be used as either an etude book and/or a duet. The second part is designed to be playable by the teacher or a more advanced student. There is a piano accompaniment book designed to accompany either the etude or duet. The alto and tenor clef books can be used for practice in these clefs for bassoonists and trombonists. They will add much to the Bass Trombone (Tuba) study/etude literature. We look forward to many performers using these valuable studies to improve their technique and musicianship.Originally written for the bassoon, these studies were favorites of the great trombone teacher, Emory Remington (1891-1971). While perhaps not concert material, they provide much more musical interest than the typical étude book.I have added dynamics and changed phrasings to be more suitable for the bass trombone (or tuba) while keeping the wide tessitura of the original. The keys have been changed to put each étude in a more suitable range, while the trills from the original bassoon version are included primarily for tuba players. These enjoyable and challenging studies will provide many hours of pleasurable practice. I have returned to these two volumes often over the years and hope that you will also find them useful and rewarding.
