Sister Mary Hueller (1921-2017), DMA from the Eastman School of Music, colleague of Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF, was professor of organ, piano, and liturgical music at Alverno College (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) throughout her professional career. At various times Sister Mary chaired the Fine Arts Division, coordinated the Music Department, and served on many college committees. After Sr. Theophane Hytrek's passing in 1992, Sr. Mary succeeded her as organist at St. Joseph Chapel for several decades.  “Tribute� was written in response to Sr. Theophane Hytrek’s choral compostion  “Canticle of the Creatures� (SSAA) sung by the School Sisters of St. Francis choirs regularly for community celebrations since it was written in 1949. The choral composition will soon be published in both SSAA and SATB arrangements.“Tribute� is of intermediate difficulty but has a challenging pedal part. At the time of composition Sr. Mary had learned to use Finale software and engraved the original score herself. This editor enjoyed spending time with Sr. Mary once a week as tutor while she developed this skill. Unfortunately the original computer file is no longer available and extant copies are not of sufficient quality to publish. Dr. Masiakowski produced the following edition based on Sr. Mary’s score. Written in 1966, this is a Baroque-sounding fugue for a good organist.  FINALE audio extracts have only one organ sound bank, so the mp3 is only an approximation of the actual sound, but the idea of the piece is clear.  It's a nice offertory, recessional, or recital piece.

This new composition is an arrangement for solo organ of the composer's SATB setting of the 15th century text by John Audelay known alternatively as There Is a Flower or The Flower of Jesse. The multiple verses of the poem are set with slight modifications to the melody, and the harmony and texture are also changed with each verse. The listener and performer will immediately notice the juxtaposition of D major and D minor tonality. The work would make a nice addition into the church organist's Advent and Christmas repertoire.

These settings were suggested by and written for Dr. Joan DeVee Dixon, Professor of Music at Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland. Dr. Dixon also serves as organist and director of music at the historic Emmanuel Parish in Cumberland, Maryland. The work was commissioned by Dr. Alvin C Broyles, retired senior research associate of Exxon Production Research Company. His is a dedicated supporter of the arts and a lifetime member of the Board of Trustees of the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas.
