Born and raised in Cyprus, an isolated Mediterranean island-state in Europe where the religious musical tradition (Greek Orthodox Christianity) relies solely on voices (no instruments used during services), I never had access to an Organ. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, there’s not a single Organ in my entire country. The first time I ever saw one was during my college years in New York – and it was love at first sight! I was fascinated by its sound capabilities, its mechanism, and the sheer skill required to play it. You can, therefore, understand how thrilled I am to have had the opportunity to write for this great instrument. I would like to sincerely thank Shannon Murphy and Austin Philemon for believing in my work, and for commissioning this piece. Both the Toccata and the Fugue are based on the same (but altered) motivic materials. The Toccata is a piece that was inspired by the idea that life is a continuous marathon, represented by the ‘mechanical’ sixteenth-note ostinato figure which never stops – despite the contrapuntal obstacles that are thrown within its path. The motive, however, does transform and adapt along the way, in order to make the best of the situation.  The Fugue, on the other hand, represents the cerebral aspect of life: the concept of choices. The ostinato motive of the Toccata has now morphed into the subject of the Fugue, which will be attacked by some violent chromatic enemies. The difference between major works and these masses is that each movement within the mass is a few minutes long and serves a purpose during the mass, as certain movements contribute to the drama of the Eucharist.This piece will be an all around pleaser, is fun to play - with the feel of a French Toccata. This edition was created in celebration of Vierne’s 150th birthday.

The work is, as one would wish to see traditionally, a kind of discussion between the two brotehr, first in agreement, then in disagreement and finally in agreement, centered around the same brief musical phrase. The work is deliberately tonal and neo-classical. It integrates different styles of profane and sacred music, without avoiding pastiche or even a musical quote. The registration indicated puts the trumpet in competition with certain organ stops, the reeds in particular. There is also use, if possible, for the traditional effections of the organ swell. It is suggested, never the less, to take care that the timbre of the trumpet is matched by those of the organ and also to use rubato moderately, only taking time during fermatas. This is a joyful work which the short Choral at the end of the first third, with its false Gregorian Theme, will never make it into a completely “serious� work.The set includes parts for Bb and C trumpets

Based on the opening verse of psalm 130, and freely composed using a 12 note scale, and brilliantly performed here by Carson Cooman. To help understand the structure of the piece, the 12 note row is seen in the first three measures and you can see how that pattern works throughout the piece. The angular melodic material combined with the dramatic cluster chords paints a vivid picture of 'the Deep'. While this music would sound well on a larger instrument, this music can easily be performed on a two manual organ with pedals. Based on the hymn Glory Be to Jesus, this is the hymn tune known as Wem In Leindenstagen or Caswall.  The range and rhythmic requirements are minimal for the young player, and the organ part plays a big role in support of the soloist.  This would be perfect for Lent, Ash Wednesday, or Holy Week services.  Parts included are for trombone, baritone bass clef, baritone treble clef, trumpet, and tenor sax.  It was recorded with the composer playing both organ and trombone (thanks to the organ's MIDI recorder)!
