The Joy of Life – Orchestra version 2 This is an original composition written in 2004 and has now been arranged and expanded for the Orchestra. It has an optimistic feel and has a few separate tunes interweaving starting very simply with a small woodwind group and expanding to climax for the full orchestra. It has a repeating descending bass line and a repeating four-bar harmony structure which gives it a feeling of moving forward. An optional piano part is included but not shown in the score. There are optional parts also Clarinet 3 and Violin 3 (Sub for Viola). The MP3 was recorded with NotePerformer 3. Grade = 3.5 Duration = 4:10 mins.

In musical terms, a pastorale can be defined as a piece that evokes the feeling of an idyllic rural scene. You might imagine a pasture in the countryside, with a shepherd gently guiding his flock.

The inspiration for this Pastorale for String Orchestra arose from the serene natural landscapes of the western United States – mountains, valleys, desert plains and plateaus, complete with flora and fauna somehow eking out their own idyllic existence.

As the sun rises and sets over this rustic backdrop, we find a life of ascetic discipline and balance – from the roaming elk herd, to the soaring eagle, to the huddle rows of quaking aspen trees.

This piece features a solo viola line that is not too difficult, and would be great for an orchestra looking to feature a budding violist.  For the orchestra, this piece also provides a useful exercise in dynamic contrast, uniform articulations, and multiple time signature changes.  I hope you enjoy!

Max Bruchâ??s â??Ave Mariaâ?� is a poignant concert piece for violoncello and orchestra, inspired by the sixth movementâ??a prayer sceneâ??from his cantata â??Das Feuerkreuzâ?� (The Fiery Cross), Opus 52. The cantata, drawing from Sir Walter Scottâ??s â??Lady of the Lake,â?� underwent a lengthy creative process before reaching completion in 1888-89.

Bruchâ??s deep affection for the Prayer Scene led him to publish it separately for voice and orchestra. However, at the urging of his friend, cellist Robert Hausmann, he reimagined it in 1892 for violoncello and orchestra, transposing it from D minor to A minor. This transformation allowed it to stand alongside his successful work â??Kol Nidrei,â?� Opus 55.

This arrangement is an orchestra driven piece. It features the brass section throughout in a majestic sort of way.
