The Sky About to Open (2004) for orchestra was written for and is dedicated to composer
Judith Weir, on the occasion of her 50th birthday.
The work is based on musical material from Desiring the Solicitude of Rain (2003-04) for
tenor and chamber orchestra, based on a text of Kathleen Wakefield. The title of this work
comes from the poem. (The title also references Weir's work The Welcome Arrival of Rain
(2000) for orchestra.)
The work is a brief fanfare of spacious character -- filled with anticipatory energy: the sky
pregnant with rain about to fall.

Music by Mark O’Connor

Harmony Musicians For Harmony, an organization founded in response to the tragic events of 9/11, asked me to compose a chamber orchestra piece for their September 11, 2006 concert in New York City . I have composed Harmony for this remembrance concert. What I wished to do in composing this music was to reveal a more Middle Eastern tonality to my style which is derived from American folk fiddle music. As I become more and more familiar with American music in my own musical journey, I also learn that the music I like so much has many layers. It exposes mystery in its origins when one cares to peel back these layers. It is likely these Middle Eastern cultures play more of a role in American fiddling (and American music in general) than previously thought.

In Harmony I use descriptive phrases printed in the score to indicate the temperament and journey of the music. Reaching Out begins the piece with its inviting and inquisitive drones. Throughout the piece there are several interpretations of the material with canonic and fugal writing. The music of Harmony is based on the same material constructed in a slow tempo in the beginning, a moderate tempo in the middle of the piece, and a fast fiddling tempo near the end. With hope in heart and music, I contribute Harmony on this painful day of remembrance.

CONCERTINO, for Clarinet, Mandolin, and Orchestra

CONCERTINO was officially commissioned in 2011 by the Geneva Chamber Orchestra. The composition explores the sound combination of two, seemingly opposing, instruments and sound characters: the clarinet and the mandolin. Thus, the three-movement work is a short double-concerto for clarinet and mandolin, accompanied by a chamber orchestra. The first movement, titled Psalm 148 and is a mixture of a coronation fanfare and a wild improvisatory-like dance. The music is based on the structure and ideas expressed in the 148th Psalm. For the transformation of this Psalmodic text into music I was concerned with two elements: first, the linguistic pulse of the ancient Biblical Hebrew gives the music its ever-changing meters and vibrant rhythms. The second element was the poetic concept presented in the text: Heaven vs. Earth, Universe vs. Planet, or Heights vs. Depths. The contrasting nature of these elements is described in the following verses:

Hallelujah, Praise ye the LORD from the heavens; praise Him in the heights. (Psalm 148, verse 1)

Praise the LORD from the earth, ye sea-monsters, and all deeps. (Psalm 148, verse 7)

Finally, both Heaven and Earth join in praise together: Let them praise the name of the LORD, for His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven. (Psalm 148, verse 13)

The musical expression of these contraries is reflected and the use of high-range and soprano instruments (flutes, clarinet, trumpets, violins) versus low-range instruments (trombone, bassoons, cellos and basses.)

The second movement, Romacero Viejo (and old love song) is a slow, lyrical dirge-like melody in a Sephardic Judeo-spanish style. In this movement the mandolin plays in the manner of an Oud – a traditional pear-shaped Arabic lute. The harmony sits mostly on a single pedal note while the clarinet imitates the chant with rhythmically free ornatmental patterns.

The third and final movement, Allegro con brio, is a festive klezmer dance with a traditional Bulgar (or Freylech) rhythm, where the regular 8/8 meter is constantly divided into the irregular count of: 3+3+2. In the middle of this movement the two soloists play a cadenza, which allows them to present their contrasting yet complementary instrumental characters. The movement is titled The Geneva Bulgar in honor of the City of Geneva and the wonderful memories I have been carrying with me ever since my time there as a young student at the Conservatoire de Musique.

Total duration: ca. 23 min.

Composed by Public Domain. Arranged by Jeff D. Anderson. Christian,Gospel,Praise & Worship,Sacred,Spiritual. Score and parts. 84 pages. AnderKamp Music #3637273. Published by AnderKamp Music (A0.742696).

Beginning with a free tempo brass chorale, this arrangement has a steady, moving 3/4 feel throughout the piece. There are some really nice call and response moments throughout the orchestra on the ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘Thine the Glory’ sections. This is a beautiful, worship ballad that works well as an offertory or as a special.

This arrangement begins in the Key of F and changes keys to the Key of G.

You don’t have to have a rhythm section to play this piece. It’s nice if you do but it’s not critical. Not at all. As long as you have a piano player, they can play the written out piano part.

As true to the entire series, this arrangement features playable, easy to read rhythms for all sections.
The 8 Core Orchestra is a full orchestra series designed to work with a core group of 8 players plus piano/rhythm.

8 Core instrumentation:
2 woodwinds, 2 trumpets, 1 horn, 2 trombones and 1 bass trombone or tuba

Full instrumentation:
2 flutes, oboe, 2 clarinets, bassoon/bass clarinet, 3 trumpets, 2 horns, 2 trombones, 1 bass trombone/tuba, 2 violins, viola, cello, double bass, harp, percussion (2 players), timpani, piano, electric bass, guitar(s) and drums (guitar and drums read from rhythm chart)

In musical terms, a pastorale can be defined as a piece that evokes the feeling of an idyllic rural scene. You might imagine a pasture in the countryside, with a shepherd gently guiding his flock.

The inspiration for this Pastorale for String Orchestra arose from the serene natural landscapes of the western United States – mountains, valleys, desert plains and plateaus, complete with flora and fauna somehow eking out their own idyllic existence.

As the sun rises and sets over this rustic backdrop, we find a life of ascetic discipline and balance – from the roaming elk herd, to the soaring eagle, to the huddle rows of quaking aspen trees.

This piece features a solo viola line that is not too difficult, and would be great for an orchestra looking to feature a budding violist.  For the orchestra, this piece also provides a useful exercise in dynamic contrast, uniform articulations, and multiple time signature changes.  I hope you enjoy!
