The last project of Solomon Mikhoels in the Moscow State Yiddish Theater (GOSET) was David Bergelson’s play Prince Reubeni (1947). Lev PULVER (1883 – 1970) composed music for the production, and it can be said that its quality perfectly corresponded to the grandeur of the performance as envisioned by Mikhoels. Since the work on the project has been stopped by the death of Mikhoels, the music for Prince Reubeni was preserved only as piano scores. Sergei PICHUGIN includes into this publication his own orchestral versions of two musical episodes of the play: Storm on the Sea and Dance of Dina.

Its characteristic rhythm was the dotted-eighth-sixteenth figure, which is used throughout this piece. The real substance of this composition is not the dance form, however, but the strict and highly evocative use of the ascending and descending forms of the melodic minor scale. Since this was such a Baroque Era staple, I felt the piece had to use Baroque forms, techniques and structures as well. So, the key is D minor. C and Bb going down, B and C# going up. No accidentals but these were used. D minor is not the happiest of keys, and accordingly the mood here is somber. The orchestral texture is NOT rich and lush, like other pieces in the series, but is thinner and more contrapuntally transparent. There are three internal cadences before the ending sequence. Suspensions, voice leading, and dissonances are all treated in a standard Baroque fashion. Bowings by string pedagogue Lori Sandell Lacey. Running time is approx 3 mins 30 secs.at suggested tempo. The piece could certainly go faster if your group can handle it. Each part is but a single page, for easy management of music in rehearsal and performance. MBB.

During the composer's lifetime, the operetta enjoyed great success, second only to the popularity of Die Fledermaus (The bat). The Ouverture is a very popular piece, often performed during concerts but it normally requires large orchestral forces: hence the present arrangement, which only requires 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 clarinet, 1 bassoon, 1 horn, 2 percussion players, and strings.P.S.: if you want to listen to a beautiful performance of this Ouverture check out the Vienna Philharmonic with Carlos Kleiber. Composed between the 21st July & the 18th October 2021, my 3rd Symphony, at around 34 minutes in duration, is the longest of my three symphonies to date & my most substantial purely orchestral score. The Symphony is in four movements following a fast-slow-fast-slow format. It is a dark probing & at times disturbing score. The Symphony makes much use of the very dark Locrian mode with its prominent diminished 5th (tritone). The 1st movement is angry & driven with a swirling energy. The 2nd movement is a kind of sad processional which builds to protesting battering climax before ending in a sense of resignation. The 3rd movement marked 'with malice' ranges from a sense of waspish humour to downright arrogant brutallity. The slow 4th movement is the longest movement, the opening hinting at two works by Wagner & Holst. The movement has a sense of questioning & searching, perhaps a single word 'why?' sums the movement up & to some extent the Symphony too. Parts are available upon request.

She also wrote orchestral music, chamber music, and over 60 songs (to poets such as Sully-Prudhomme, Michel Carré, Henri Meilhac, Georges Hartmann, Charles Grandmougin and Louis Gallet.)
