The compositional process for the piece began for O’Connor in 2003, the very day the war was launched in Iraq. The piece was finished about three weeks later around the time the statues of the Iraqi dictator fell in Baghdad. This music is a reflection of the people who lost their lives in the war. This particular impact on his music makes for quite a different result from O’Connor’s usual optimism. However he finds a way to weave in a sense of a better future in the third movement. I liked the bold tone very much and decided to compose a piece for it. The theme and ending are written in Chinese style using the pentatonic or five-tone scale. The six variations move into Western harmonies and a variety of rhythms. The world premier was held on February 10, 2008. Matt Springer was soloist with the San Francisco Civic Symphony. The second performance by Matt was with the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra on June 7, 2008, John Kendall Bailey, conductor.. The audio clip is a recording of that performance. From this point of view, the pieces could have just as successfully been called Australian Days. As such, each piece represents a kind of day journey in microcosm, like a travel diary set to music. The points of interest in each day are indicated sequentially in the music.The pieces were written with the intermediate student string orchestra in mind. As such, they explore a wide variety of string techniques, dynamic and tonal contrasts, styles, and moods. Although the writing never takes a student out of first position barring one solo cello passage, and the fingering avoids the use of cello forward extensions and minimises high 3s for the upper strings, the technical, rhythmic, ensemble, and intonational challenges put these pieces at the intermediate level. There are ossias and other alternatives for greater challenge or greater ease. Fingering has been offered where appropriate. And bowing has been meticulously indicated.This particular piece, Snowy Mountains, is set in the alpine region of Australia, in Thredbo in the state of NSW, which is a popular ski resort. The scene opens with the majesty and austerity of the alpine mountains. Then, the cold sets the teeth chattering and the feet stamping with a paraphrase from Vivaldi's Winter from The Four Seasons but which transforms into the iconic Australian song, Waltzing Matilda. From there, fun is had in the snow followed by the journey up the ski lift to the top of the ski fields. Then, of course, there is the exhilarating ski journey down the mountain! After more fun in the snow, the day ends, everybody tired but happy!
