Fantasie-Legende for Trombone and Orchestra by early 20th Century Danish composer Axel Jørgensen was forgotten for quite a while but has been rediscovered, edited, and recorded (with piano accompaniment) by noted Danish Trombonist and educator Niels-Ole Bo Johansen. The work is in a late-Romantic style with hints of impressionism, about 4 minutes in length, and is appropriate for advanced intermediate level performers (range is up to a high B). The instrumentation is for Full Score, Solo Trombone, 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets, 2 Bassoons, 3 Horns, 2 Trumpets, Timpani, and Strings. The version with piano accompaniment has been beautifully recorded by the editor, Niels-Ole Bo Johanssen from his CD, The French Connection.

It often was (and it continues to be) played during wedding ceremonies. A noted public performance of the piece occurred during the opening ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The upper bassoon part has been put on the clarinet and the trumpet changed to a Bflat instrument. The string parts are more challenging but all should be playable for an intermediate/upper intermediate group.

The first movement is lyrical and tender, while the second movement is lively and playful. The third movement is a stormy and passionate finale, where the violinist confronts his rival for the woman’s affection.
