Keras, was a musical instrument of ancient Greece. It was an instrument that was created from thehorn of an animal. It consisted of a perforated conical horn from which the bone core was removed and then baked in order to improve its sonority. The sound was produced with direct blow in the hole and the suitable lip technique. In this piece, the horn is treated like an ancient Keras, so, a lot of changes of the pitch are effected entirely by the lips without changing fingerings in order to produces them.

Before writing this piece, I researched the possibilities of the horn by comparing intervals to the harmonics and to the fingerings used by the soloist to produce them. I found out that the horn is capable of playing eight or more different microtones, within the space of a whole tone, in certain portions of its range (as shown in the example below).

Numbers below the notes are in cents (1/2 step equals 100 cents, octave equals 1200 cents). Above the microtonal notes there are the fingerings that the performer must use in order to produce the specific pitch.

This is written for Horn and Strings and could be an effective encore after a concerto is played by the horn soloist. The picture on the front of the score was taken from Waterrock Knob in the Blue Ridge Mountains. On the left of the picture is South Carolina; in the middle, North Carolina, and on the right part of Tennessee. A lot of horn players play the Alphorn too, and it is popular in mountainous territory all over the world. This Serenade is a light, feel-good piece and is enjoyable by performers and audiences alike. The format is all the parts followed by the full score.

This four-movement sonata for horn and piano is for professional players (or graduate students), designed to rival the top horn sonatas in the professional repertoire.  I wrote this over the course of a year or so, completing it in 2018, for Rachel Velvikis, hornist with the internationally acclaimed Seraph Brass Quintet.  Rachel and I collaborated on the work, and her input helped shape the final version of this piece.  Both the horn and piano parts require top-notch players.  We had a world premier scheduled for August of 2020, but the COVID crisis cancelled that; we are still looking for a concert date to premier the work.  The mp3 audio is a FINALE audio extract.

Sonata No. 1 for Horn and Piano was written for American Hornist Melissa Morey by  composer P. F. Strohm. The piece is in three movements and tonal throughout. It is a fresh take on the traditional Horn sonata, perfect for recital, festival or contest. The sonata is subtitled Cinématique, an homage to the great Hollywood film score composers that served as inspiration for many of the musical elements. Be prepared for a ride through a musical landscape of drama, mystery, comedy and heroics. The sonata shows off the agility and diversity of the Horn, with a bravura cadenza and conclusion.
