In 1914 Sigmund Romberg was hired by the Shubert brothers to write music for their Broadway theater shows. Romberg wrote Ragtime Arabian Nights for the Broadway revue The Whirl of the World, presented in the Shuberts' Winter Garden Theater, that same year.   This is a charming tune, with the verse in a minor key, switching to the relatively major to start the chorus. DOS BAILES, Two Dances, has been written as a show piece for the more advanced brass quintet. Performance time is about five minutes and fifty seconds, using the suggested tempo markings. The introduction includes a cadenza for the two trumpet players. Ranges are reasonable, except for the trumpet I part which has a written D above high C in the cadenza. The French Horn part has several instances of high staff tessitura and ascends to Bb and B above the staff a couple of times.  The following keys are featured: c minor, C Major, Eb Major, Bb Major.  There are also excursions to modal harmonies and juxtapositions of various hemiola-type rhythmic patterns. Trumpet, French Horn, and trombone performers must be able to employ multiple tonguing; and all players must demonstrate bravura playing  as well as a delicate waltz style.
